Understanding Depression

If you are here, it's because you (or someone you know) have either felt something like depression or maybe you are sad for no specific reason. Perhaps you're sleepy all the time. It could be that you are  not feeling too motivated or that some things in your life are not going the way you expected. Maybe you are a psychology student. Maybe all of the above. Whatever the reason, today we will explore the causes and symptoms of depression so you have a better understanding of this disorder and can take the necessary steps to feel better.

I'd like to start by saying that in my 20 + years of experience as a clinical psychologist in Buenos Aires, I have seen my clients´ depression manifest in many different ways. Depression, also known as major depressive disorder (MDD), is a common and serious medical illness that affects how you feel, think, and act.  Although the symptoms of depression can vary in severity, duration, and frequency, common symptoms include:

Emotional Symptoms

  1. Persistent Sadness: A constant feeling of sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness.
  2. Loss of Interest: Disinterest in activities once enjoyed, including hobbies, social activities, and sex.
  3. Feelings of Guilt or Worthlessness: Intense feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness.
  4. Irritability: Increased irritability or frustration, even over small matters.
  5. Anxiety: Frequent feelings of restlessness or anxiety.

Cognitive Symptoms

  1. Difficulty Concentrating: Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
  2. Negative Thinking: Pervasive negative thoughts, self-criticism, or pessimism.
  3. Suicidal Thoughts: Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, or suicide attempts.

Physical Symptoms

  1. Changes in Appetite or Weight: Significant weight loss or gain, or changes in appetite.
  2. Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping (hypersomnia).
  3. Fatigue: Persistent fatigue or lack of energy, even with adequate rest.
  4. Physical Aches and Pains: Unexplained physical problems, such as headaches, back pain, or digestive issues.
  5. Psychomotor Agitation or Retardation: Observable restlessness or slowed movements and speech.

Behavioral Symptoms

  1. Social Withdrawal: Withdrawal from social interactions and activities.
  2. Neglect of Responsibilities: Difficulty maintaining daily responsibilities, such as work, school, or household tasks.
  3. Self-Harm: Engaging in self-injurious behaviors, such as cutting.

Causes of Depression

The exact cause of depression is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Some of the key causes and risk factors include:

Genetic Factors

  1. Family History: Having a family history of depression or other mental health disorders increases the risk of developing depression.

Biological Factors

  1. Neurotransmitter Imbalances: Imbalances in brain chemicals, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, are linked to depression.
  2. Hormonal Changes: Changes in hormone levels, such as those occurring during pregnancy, postpartum, menopause, or thyroid disorders, can trigger depression.
  3. Brain Structure: Abnormalities in certain brain regions, such as the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and amygdala, may contribute to depression.

Environmental Factors

  1. Trauma and Stress: Exposure to trauma, abuse, neglect, or significant life stressors, such as loss of a loved one, divorce, financial problems, or job loss, can trigger depression.
  2. Chronic Illness: Living with chronic illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, or diabetes, can increase the risk of depression.
  3. Substance Abuse: Alcohol or drug abuse can lead to or exacerbate depression.

Psychological Factors

  1. Personality Traits: Certain personality traits, such as low self-esteem, excessive dependence, perfectionism, and pessimism, can increase vulnerability to depression.
  2. Negative Thinking Patterns: Persistent negative thinking patterns and cognitive distortions can contribute to the development and maintenance of depression.

Social Factors

  1. Social Isolation: Lack of social support, loneliness, and social isolation are significant risk factors for depression.
  2. Relationship Problems: Interpersonal conflicts, marital issues, and family problems can contribute to depression.

Medical Factors

  1. Medications: Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, beta-blockers, and anticonvulsants, can have side effects that include depression.
  2. Chronic Pain: Chronic pain conditions can lead to or worsen depression.

When communicating with narcissistic individuals, it's crucial to be clear, concise, and assertive. Avoid emotional reactions or confrontation. Stick to the facts, and express your needs and boundaries calmly and assertively.

Addressing narcissism often requires the expertise of a mental health professional. If you suspect someone has NPD, or if narcissistic behavior is causing distress in your life, consider seeking therapy or counseling for yourself and potentially for the individual exhibiting these traits.


Tip 6: Encourage Self-Reflection


In some cases, narcissistic individuals may benefit from self-reflection. Gently encourage them to explore their behavior and its impact on themselves and others. This approach may lead to personal growth and positive change.


Tip 7: Practice Empathy


While narcissistic individuals may struggle with empathy, practicing empathy on your end can help de-escalate conflicts and foster understanding. Empathy doesn't mean enabling their behavior but rather understanding their underlying insecurities.

While it is normal to experience occasional feelings of jealousy, unchecked and excessive jealousy can have a significant impact on the dynamics and well-being of a romantic partnership. Understanding Jealousy:

Jealousy typically stems from a fear of losing the affection, attention, or loyalty of a partner to a perceived rival. The Detrimental Effects of Repression: Unveiling the Path to Emotional Liberation

Repression, the act of suppressing or denying thoughts, feelings, or desires, has long been a topic of interest in psychology and human behavior. While it may initially seem like a defense mechanism to protect ourselves from discomfort, repression ultimately leads to negative consequences for our mental, emotional and physical well-being. 

In this piece, we will delve into the reasons why repression is not a positive approach and explore the importance of embracing our emotions and experiences.

Emotional Suppression:

Repression involves burying or ignoring our authentic emotions, which can lead to a buildup of unresolved psychological tension. By suppressing feelings such as anger, sadness, or fear, we deny ourselves the opportunity to process and understand these emotions. Over time, repressed emotions can manifest as anxiety, depression, or even physical ailments, as the body and mind struggle to contain the emotional weight.

Impaired Relationships:

Emotional Release and Healing:

Repression prevents the natural process of emotional release and healing. Emotions are meant to be felt, acknowledged, and processed. By embracing and expressing our emotions in healthy ways, we allow ourselves to experience catharsis and find closure. Repression, on the other hand, traps unresolved emotions within us, leading to a persistent emotional burden that hinders our overall well-being.

Authenticity and Self-Acceptance:

Repression obscures our authentic selves. By denying certain emotions or aspects of our experiences, we create a fragmented version of ourselves that is detached from reality. True self-acceptance and self-love come from embracing the full range of our emotions, both positive and negative. By acknowledging and accepting our emotions, we foster a sense of authenticity, self-compassion, and a deeper understanding of who we are.

Repression then, may provide temporary relief from emotional discomfort, but the long-term consequences are detrimental to our mental and emotional health. 

Embracing our emotions, acknowledging their presence, and finding healthy outlets for their expression are essential for our overall well-being. By embracing emotional liberation, we can cultivate self-awareness, forge meaningful connections, and embark on a journey of personal growth and fulfillment. Let us strive to create a world where authenticity and emotional openness are valued, nurturing our collective well-being.

Palermo Exhibition

Don't miss James Joyce by Ana Lía Werthein at Dain Usina Cultural, you'll like it!




















I found out about this exhibition thanks to the kindness of one of our readers (we love our readers!) who sent us an email telling us that we should check it out. So I did!

The exhibition curated by Rodrigo Alonso, includes several of Ana Lía's works inspired by Joyce. Just as Joyce used all the literary resources available to him in his work, Ana Lía uses a rich repertoire of techniques including drawing, graphics, paint, manuscripts and watercolor painting in her exploration of Joyce, sharing with us her sensitive encounter with his universe via paintings, objects, sculptures, photography and mixed techniques.
























The artist who lives and works in Buenos Aires is also a psychoanalist.

Palermo "Sensible"

This post follows a previous one as no coincidence: If tango is a
space to let out your passion, consulting with a psychologist or
psychoanalyst is a way to tame your instincts and passions.

Psychoanalysis is a practice that defines an interesting amount of
Argentines: "if you live in Buenos Aires and don't have a
shrink,
you must be mad" is a common saying here.

The career of Psychology is ranked 3rd in choice, so imagine.
The figures of the 2009 Census show that there is a Psychologist
every 120 inhabitants in the city of Buenos Aires itself. The stats
from last year's Census are not ready yet but we are to assume that
this number has increased.

Psychology is taught in its many versions here: French Lacanian School,
Freudian School, English School, Italian, Systemic, Cognitive,
Behavioral, etc. The beginnings of Psychoanalysis were pretty dark.
Starting in the 1940's, by 1949, the Argentine Association of
Psychoanalysis was accepted by the International Association of
Psychoanalysis. It was first taught in small study groups to
doctors, mainly to psychiatrists. Psychoanalysis was prohibited
during militar dictatorships (1976 - 1983) because it was considered
controversial, it made you think too much, in a period in which you
were supposed to follow orders blindly. Psychoanalytic books were in
the list of the books that were forbidden by the military - having one
of those books, openly being a pshychoanalist could get you killed.

Back in democracy, a law was passed regulating the practice of
Psychology in 1985. That is how the career of Psychology came into
being and has ever since maintained it's independence from the career
of Medicine. Universities throughout the country started teaching it,
expanding the amount of graduates.

There are so many students and so many patients in Buenos Aires
itself that it is very common to hear psychological slang in the
streets or in coffee shops. If you were in London and had an
interest in the field, you would of course, visit the Freud Museum.
Well, if you are in Buenos Aires, you would want to visit Villa Freud.
This is were the majority of the pshychoanalist in Buenos Aires have set
up their practices. It is located around Plaza Guemes between Honduras,
Av. Scalabrini Ortiz, Av. Sta Fe and Coronel Diaz. As a result of all the
psychoanalytic movement in the area, bars and cafés started to adopt
the mood, including shrink terms in their menues, etc. Two of these became
famous also because they echoed the name of the Founder "Sigi" and "Freud".

Wood Allen who has been taking some time off from NYC, should visit us some
day, he'd have a blast shooting one of his films here, no?
